Internationally-qualified Nurses and Re-entry Nurses
The Assessment of Competence program is designed for Australian registered and enrolled nurses who have not practiced within the profession for a period of more than five years and wish to update their nursing and skills, knowledge and competency in order to return to the workforce.
This program is a Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) approved pathway for internationally-qualified nurses to achieve the level of competency and skills that is required for registration as a nurse by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Participants
are oriented to contemporary nursing practice in Australia. The program
builds upon participant’s previous knowledge, skills and experience to
prepare them to demonstrate safe practice at the entry-to-practice level
according to the relevant Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council
(ANMC) competency standards.
The
program consists of a theoretical component of 150 hours, comprised of
classroom sessions, clinical skills practice and self-directed learning.
A further 150 hours of professional experience placement* is undertaken
at various metropolitan and regional participating hospitals.
First: Know the state you want to apply - Victoria, NSW, Queensland etc.
Second: Apply for registration in that State's Board of Nurses for assessment
Requirements:
- Evidence of successful completion of a nursing course, eg: degree
- Course Transcript
- Evidence of initial License in the place where the course was completed
- Evidence of Identification (birth certificate or passport or marriage certificate for name change purposes)
- Evidence of competent, licensed nursing practice within the five years prior to the application.
- Application fee of A$49.00 and application processing fee of A$109.00
Question:
- Can I apply if I don't have any working experience? To be honest, I'm not sure what the correct information. Some say, you can apply without working experience, while other say you cannot. I choose a different path so its the risk you take. You can confirm on the BON if it is necessary.
-Also, should that working experience be in a tertiary hospital, because that's what i've heard from my friends here? Same answer
-lastly, i need to pass the ielts before i apply, right?? (actually i
think i got to retake the test because i got 6.5 in writing) Yes, you have to retake the IELTS. It is very clear that it should be 7.0 in all levels.
Third: if they assessed you as qualified they will invite you to take the bridging course or CAS program
- You will
then receive the offer package for it. You will be given 90 days to
respond to that and a 30-day extension will be given if you still
haven't sent them your confirmation to enroll to the said program.
Fourth: Finally, pass the bridging course then you'll become Aussie RN.
Fifth: Find someone anywhere in Australia that will Sponsor you for working visa (Hospital, Agency, Company)
Here are some:
Mission accomplished!!!

hi! nice post. im looking up on blogs to get some ideas on how to land a job as rn in aussie. ahm, im working in ksa for almost 3yrs in a tertiary hospital. do you have an idea on how i could start working things out? :)
Hello Smile,
Thank you, glad it can help you. I started this blog for personal used only but made it public for some of my classmate who wanted to know how to get here as well. To be honest, It might be challenging to get a job here as RN when your qualification and credential is not from Australian University. However, you can start processing your papers to get register here and hopefully find an Aged-Care facilities to sponsor you a working visa and then after 2 years might qualify you for a PR and landed a job from Hospital. I do not know anybody who landed a job straight to hospital. But who knows, maybe your one of them. At the moment, I don't know anyone who landed an RN job straight from Phil who recently got their AU Nursing registration.
As for myself, I choose a different path of studying Nursing again with credits from my previous Nursing degree in Phil after a year of getting my Phil RN license. The chance of landing an RN position here increase an 85% chance of getting a RN job as when you finish Uni you will qualify for a "New grad position" were you can get into a Level 1 Nursing. In the meantime, I'm doing AIN jobs while studying to help me with my daily expenses and uni fees. I got some classmate as well who choose to do university even though they got 5 yrs ER nursing experience.
My advice is to start studying for IETLS and get 7.0 in all area and total score. Now, after that its your choice to choose either you do a bridging visa (AURN Registration)or Student Visa (BSN) I got some few info about bridging visa and comparison. Search mo nalang mga entry ko.
Hope that helps.
hi, thanks for the info. It really helps a lot, i was wondering, did you have clinical experience when you registered for the assessment of qualifications?
Hello Eli,
Just to clarify, I'm on student visa at the moment and I choose to study Nursing again with credits from my nursing degree in Phil.
I did not apply for the registration for the assessment of qualification as yet.
Also, I don't have any clinical working experience, as soon as I finish my nursing degree in Phil, when I got my RN license, I only did a 3 months of volunteer at ER-PGH then I fly straight here in Australia.
Hi my_melody,
I'm Mae and I have read your blog. We have the same issue, I graduated last 2013 and then flew here in aussie. i'm currently in aussie right now. Hope to keep in touch with you through facebook.
Can I please have your fb name so that I can add u up. I have questions kc if u dont mind.
Hi.dear
Pls kindly share me how to pay for 3 months course fees , is there any installment system
to pay and after course, even I got a sponser in aging care setting, may i know how much the salary range to earn back..thank u so much for sharing...
Hello mae,
You can leave me a message or asked me question here. It might take a while for me to answer but will do my best if I got enough time. At the moment, I'm very busy with work and study. God bless.
Hello EILAY,
I'm sorry I don't know how to pay for the 3 yr course. I assume your doing the bridging program. You can email the state kung saan ka nag aapply. Also, regarding sa salary. I'm have no idea for RN Nurses in Age-care who got sponsored. Normally ang minimum dito as A.I.N. is $16-$19 per hour.
hello Im glad I found your blog as I was about to decide if Im going to pursue my plan of studying Nursing again in Australia like what you did. Is it difficult to find a part-time job? are there jobs available? Is your salary from working part time enough to meet your daily expenses and tuition fee? thank you! :)
Thanks Menchie, glad I can help. In my experience...
First question: Is it difficult to find a part-time job? Yes and No,
Yes - on the first month to 6 months (1st semester) I was jobless because I'm still finding my way around, I have to settle in and get the taste of uni life.
No - Assistant in Nursing (AIN) is everywhere specially in Age-care, disabilities and mental health. However, hospital base is challenging coz they only accept AIN's around 2nd-3rd year student.
Second question: Is your salary from working part time enough to meet your daily expenses and tuition fee? NO
NO - because the tuition fees is way too much and your only allowed to work 40 hrs a fortnight. It can cover your daily expenses, quarter or half of the tuition fees and have a little bit of social life but man, you got to maximize 40 hrs a fortnight for all this. If not you may not be able to cover all the fees, only living expenses.Unfortunately, in my case
I don't normally maximize my 40 hrs a fortnight because university is very demanding and we cannot fail any subject. However, I work hard and exceed the hours during university break. Up to this point I haven't gone back home (Phil) just to save for the next semester.
So the dilemma of prioritization should take charge. After a shift I feel exhausted. You really have to balance your time and you got to fight boredom and loneliness.
Hope that help.
hello, im a RN in phil. how many years of experience do i need to get to oz? and should i take a bridging course? or a degree like 1 - 2years?
